Epitaph Restoration Project

The epitaph of the von Arnstedt family is a centuries-old tomb in the cathedral that was destroyed in a bombing raid at the end of the Second World War. Professor Bernhard Preim, Dr. Patrick Saalfeld and Dr. Fabian Klink from the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg want to restore this together with the Domförderverein. From the more than 200 recovered fragments they want to assemble the tomb monument of the canon Friedrich von Arnstedt and his family. The scientists have been working on reassembling the oversized puzzle since autumn 2018. “We don’t just want to reassemble the fragments, we also want to create a virtual model so that we can tell the story of the reconstruction,” says Bernhard Preim.
