Illustrative Visualization Techniques

In different research areas illustrative visualization techniques are used to convey complex information in a simplified and more abstract manner. These techniques have their origin in traditional illustration techniques like pen-and-ink techniques (e.g., stippling and hatching) and smart visibility techniques (e.g. ghosted and exploded views). Often, they are adapted to a certain application to enhance important information, such as surface shape, depth, focus-and-context relations and spatial relationships.

In our working group, we focus on both the development and improvement of existent illustrative visualization techniques and their application to several medical research areas, such as blood flow visualization and treatment planning. Thereby, we incorporate related topics that are necessary to extract the important information, e.g., differential geometry, vector field analysis and advanced GPU programming. The effectivness of the investigated and proposed techniques are assessed by means of perceptual evaluation studies.

A short summarization of our current field of research:

  • Developing of illustrative rendering techniques
  • Adapting and extending of existent techniques for anatomical structures and scenes
  • Evaluation of these techniques in a medical context is done by the perceptual evaluation research project
