Rudolf-Kruse-Price

Lena Spitz was awarded with the Rudolf-Kruse-Price 2020. This award is given annually by the faculty to a student for the best student scholarly publication. Lena submitted her JCARS Paper: Combining Visual Analytics and Case-Based Reasoning for Rupture Risk Assessment of Intracranial Aneurysms, Lena Spitz, Uli Niemann, Oliver Beuing, Belal Neyazi, Erol Sandalcioglu, Bernhard Preim and Sylvia Saalfeld, International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, 15(9), p. 1525-1535, 2020. which is based on her bachelor thesis that was supervised by Sylvia Saalfeld and Bernhard Preim. Congratulations!

New member of the VIS group

We are happy that Mareen Allgaier joined our team. She will be primarily working with Sylvia Saalfeld and strengthen our activities in neuroradiology and neurosurgery, contributing also to research goals in the research campus STIMULATE.”

VCBM 2020

Our contribution “Learning Hand Anatomy with Sense of Embodiment” by Patrick Saalfeld, Aylin Albrecht, Wolfgang D’Hanis, Hermann-Josef Rothkötter and Bernhard Preim was awarded as best short paper at the Eurographics Workshop on Visual Computing for Biology and Medicine!

In this project, we developed a virtual reality prototype for an immersive exploration of the hand anatomy. This interdisciplinary project was joint work with the Institute of Anatomy at the University Hospital of Magdeburg.

Funding for 5 VR Headsets for Student Projects

We upgraded our VR lab with 5 HTC Vive Pro Eye VR headsets. These allow us to track all headsets in an area of 10 by 10 meters at the same time. We will use this setup to support lectures and student projects of our faculty with hands-on demonstrations of spatial interaction. The equipment is funded by an internal grant from the Faculty of Computer Science at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg.

Mensch und Computer Conference

Together with the VR/AR group (Prof. C. Hansen) we organized the German HCI conference covering a wide range of basic and applied research topics with some 800 participants. User interfaces for cars, for elderly users, for medical technology – these are just examples for the topics discussed in various formats. The full-, short- and demo paper talks are available on the conference’s YouTube Channel. Links: MUC2020 Website, OvGU Press Release

2nd Place for worldwide touchless interaction contest

Patrick Saalfeld teamed up with Danny Schott from the Virtual and Augmented Reality Group for Ultraleap´s Beyond Touchscreens 3-week developer competition. They needed to develop an innovative public interface for a post-COVID-19 world using the Leap motion controller. The proof-of-concept shows an interactive prototype, which enables a contactless food configuration in restaurants by means of hand gestures.
