Our contribution “Learning Hand Anatomy with Sense of Embodiment” by Patrick Saalfeld, Aylin Albrecht, Wolfgang D’Hanis, Hermann-Josef Rothkötter and Bernhard Preim was awarded as best short paper at the Eurographics Workshop on Visual Computing for Biology and Medicine!
In this project, we developed a virtual reality prototype for an immersive exploration of the hand anatomy. This interdisciplinary project was joint work with the Institute of Anatomy at the University Hospital of Magdeburg.
We upgraded our VR lab with 5 HTC Vive Pro Eye VR headsets. These allow us to track all headsets in an area of 10 by 10 meters at the same time. We will use this setup to support lectures and student projects of our faculty with hands-on demonstrations of spatial interaction. The equipment is funded by an internal grant from the Faculty of Computer Science at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg.
Together with the VR/AR group (Prof. C. Hansen) we organized the German HCI conference covering a wide range of basic and applied research topics with some 800 participants. User interfaces for cars, for elderly users, for medical technology – these are just examples for the topics discussed in various formats. Patrick Saalfeld teamed up with Danny Schott from the Virtual and Augmented Reality Group for Ultraleap´s Beyond Touchscreens 3-week developer competition. They needed to develop an innovative public interface for a post-COVID-19 world using the Leap motion controller. The proof-of-concept shows an interactive prototype, which enables a contactless food configuration in restaurants by means of hand gestures.

Shiva Alemzadeh submitted her Phd thesis on “Visual Analytics of Epidemiological and Multi-Omics Data”. She is currently working as a researcher at the VRVis in Vienna.
Benjamin Behrendt submitted his Phd thesis on “Visual Exploration and Comparison of Cardiac and Cerebral Blood Flow Data”. He contiuned our collaboration with the Heart center Leipzig and initiated a cooperation with Ingrid Hotz’ group in Norrköping.
